How to spot a fake discount on Indian shopping sites
“80% off” sounds like a steal, but the percentage is only as honest as the MRP it is calculated from. Some listings raise the MRP or the regular price just before a sale, so the discount looks bigger than it is. Here is how to check.
1. Compare with the price history, not the MRP
The real question is: is today’s price lower than what this product usually sells for? A price-history tracker answers that: look the product up and see where today’s price sits against the last few months. On ZoopDeals, we flag a price as “lowest in 90 days” only after we have tracked it long enough to know.
2. Check the same product on another store
The same phone, shoe or serum is often on Amazon, Flipkart and the brand’s own site. If one store’s “deal” matches everyone else’s normal price, it isn’t a deal.
3. Read the seller, not just the brand
A very low price from an unknown seller can mean an older model, a refurbished unit or a grey-market import with no Indian warranty. Check the seller name and warranty terms on the listing.
4. Count the extras in the final price
- Delivery and handling fees
- Bank offers that need a specific card, and their minimum order value
- Exchange offers that only apply if you trade in an old device
Compare the price you will actually pay, after all of these.
5. Be careful with countdown timers
“Deal ends in 2 hours” is often a recurring banner. If the product is not urgent, it’s fine to wait and watch the price for a few days.
